(742-814) the King of the Franks. who gained control of most of western Europe in 800 by uniting its Christian countries. The Pope gave him the title of "Holy Roman Emperor". Charlemagne had a great influence on European civilization, by establishing a new legal system and encouraging art, literature, and education.
