the capital of Scotland, in the east of the country on the River Forth. Edinburgh is a centre for business, industry, education, and the law, and the new Scottish parliament is there. It is an important cultural centre, with many theatres, concert halls, and museums. Because of this, it is sometimes called "the Athens of the North".
