(1921- ) a US writer and feminist (=someone who supports the idea that women should have the same rights and opportunities as men) who argued against the idea that women could only be happy and satisfied if they were wives and mothers. Many people believe that her book The Feminine Mystique (1963) started the modern women's movement.
