a country in southwest Asia, between Iran and Saudi Arabia. Population: 23,332,000 (2001). Capital: Baghdad. It is an oil-producing country. Under its leader, Saddam Hussein, Iraq was at war with Iran from 1980 to 1988. Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990 but was forced to leave by United Nations Forces led by the US. In 2003, military forces led by the US invaded Iraq and removed Saddam Hussein from power. His government was replaced a by a council of Iraqi leaders.
