1 in the New Testament of the Bible, one of Jesus's disciples (=his close friends and followers). He received 'thirty pieces of silver' from the Jewish authorities as payment for Betraying Jesus. He later felt guilty about what he had done, and hanged himself.
2 someone who is not loyal to a friend [= traitor]
