(1925-70) a Japanese writer who most people consider to be the most important Japanese writer of novels in the 20th century. He wrote about modern Japan and wanted to return to older, more traditional Japanese values. His best-known books include Confessions of a Mask and The Sea of Fertility. He killed himself using the traditional Japanese method of harakiri after a military coup by his small private army was unsuccessful.
