(1801-90) a British theologian (=someone who studies religion and religious beliefs) and writer. He was a priest in the Church of England and became leader of the Oxford Movement. Later he changed his religion and became a Roman Catholic, and he was made a cardinal (=a priest of high rank) in 1879.
