(1881-1973) a Spanish artist who was one of the greatest and most original artists of the 20th century. After training as an artist in Barcelona and Madrid he moved to Paris in 1900 and stayed there for many years. He helped to develop cubism and other styles of abstract art, and his work is divided into periods, such as the "Blue Period" and the "Rose Period". His many famous paintings include 'Les Demoiselles d'Avignon' and 'Guernica', a criticism of war andfascism.
