Pinocchio
a character in an Italian children's story that was later made into a cartoon film. Pinocchio is a wooden puppet who at the end of the story comes alive as a real boy. At one point in the story, Pinocchio's nose grows longer when he tells lies. People sometimes mention the idea of someone's nose growing longer to mean that someone is lying.
