(1947- ) a British writer born in India, who won the Booker Prize for his novel Midnight's Children. In 1988 his novel The Satanic Verses offended Muslims because they said that it was insulting to their religion, with the result that Ayatollah Khomeini in Iran gave afatwa, an order that Rushdie should be killed. He had to live in a secret place for many years.
