(1902-68) a US writer whose novels, including TheGrapes of Wrath, East of Eden, and Of Mice and Men show great sympathy for poor people and their problems. He is one of the most popular and admired US writers of the 20th century, and he won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962.
