(1908-97) a very popular US film actor, who had a soft, slow way of speaking and was known for often playing very ordinary, honest characters. His many films include Mr Smith goes to Washington (1939) and It's a Wonderful Life (1946), and he also acted in several films by the director Alfred Hitchcock, including Rear Window.
