(1900-67) a US film actor known especially for appearing as characters who were honest and had high moral principles. He often worked with Katharine Hepburn, with whom he had a romantic relationship with for many years. His films include Captains Courageous (1937), Adam's Rib (1949), and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967).
