From Longman Dictionary of Contemporary EnglishAlcatrazAl‧ca‧traz /ˈælkətræz/  a prison on a rocky island in San Francisco Bay, in California. It was known for being almost impossible to escape from, and for having very strict rules for its prisoners. When people are describing a place that is very difficult to escape from, they often compare it to Alcatraz.
