Hiss, Alger

From Longman Dictionary of Contemporary EnglishHiss, AlgerAlger HissHiss, Al‧ger /ˈældʒə $ -dʒər/  (1904–1996) a US government official who was put in prison from 1950 to 1954 for being a Communist spy. Many people believed he was not guilty, and documents from the former Soviet Union seemed to prove this, when they were made public in 1992. see also McCarthyism
