From Longman Dictionary of Contemporary EnglishAlmatyAlmaty (also Alma-Ata)  a city in southeast Kazakhstan. From 1929 to 1997 it was the country's capital, and it was formerly called Vernoye, Verny, or Vernyi. Since 1997 the capital has been Astana.
