From Longman Dictionary of Contemporary EnglishObama, BarackBarack ObamaO·ba·ma, Bar·ack /əʊˈbɑːmə, ˈbæræk $ oʊ-/   (1961-) a US politician in the Democratic Party who became US president in 2009. He was relected in 2013 after defeating Republican candidate Mitt Romney in the election. He is the first African American to be US president. Before becoming president, he was a member of the Illinois State Senate from 1997 to 2004, and joined the US Senate as junior senator from Illinois in January 2005.
