Ahern, Bertie

From Longman Dictionary of Contemporary EnglishAhern, BertieBertie AhernA‧hern, Ber‧tie /əˈhɜːn $ -ɜːrn, ˈbɜːti $ -ɜːr-/ 🔊 🔊 (1951–) an Irish politician who was leader of the Fianna Fail party from 1994 until 2008, and who was the Taoiseach (= prime minister) of the Republic of Ireland from 1997 until 2008. In 1998 he and the UK Prime Minister Tony Blair signed the Good Friday Agreement that began a process aimed at bringing peace to Northern Ireland.
