Black and Tans, the

From Longman Dictionary of Contemporary EnglishBlack and Tans, thethe Black and TansˌBlack and ˈTans, the [P]  a British military force that was active in Ireland from 1918 to 1920, opposing the people who were fighting for independence. They were known for the cruel and violent way in which they did their work.
