From Longman Dictionary of Contemporary EnglishBritish TelecomˌBritish ˈTelecom (abbreviation BT)  the former name of the largest company providing telephone services in the UK. It used to be owned by the government and was then the only telephone company in the UK. Since it became a private company, other companies have also been allowed to provide telephone services. The company is now called BT.
