From Longman Dictionary of Contemporary EnglishNewman, Cardinal John HenryCardinal John Henry NewmanNew‧man, Cardinal John Henry /ˈnjuːmən $ ˈnuː-/  (1801–90) a British theologian (=someone who studies religion and religious beliefs) and writer. He was a priest in the church of england and became leader of the oxford movement. Later he changed his religion and became a Roman Catholic, and he was made a cardinal (=a priest of high rank) in 1879.
