Colossus of Rhodes, the

From Longman Dictionary of Contemporary EnglishColossus of Rhodes, thethe Colossus of RhodesCoˌlossus of ˈRhodes, the  an extremely large ancient statue of the god Apollo on the Greek island of Rhodes. It is believed to have stood at the entrance to the harbour, with one leg on each side, and ships sailed under it to enter the harbour. It was one of the seven wonders of the world, and was destroyed by an earthquake in 224 bc.
