From Longman Dictionary of Contemporary EnglishConstantinopleCon‧stan‧ti‧no‧ple /ˌkɒnstæntəˈnəʊpəl $ ˌkɑːn-/  the city on the Bosphorus which was the capital of the byzantine Empire for seven centuries from 330 AD, when it was established by Constantine the Great on the place where Byzantium had formerly stood. Later it was the capital of Turkey. It is now called Istanbul.
