Roosevelt, Eleanor

From Longman Dictionary of Contemporary EnglishRoosevelt, EleanorEleanor RooseveltRoo‧se‧velt, El‧ea‧nor /ˈrəʊzəvelt, ˈelənə $ ˈroʊ-, -nər/  (1884–1962) a US writer and politician who was the wife of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. She actively supported improvements in the social and economic conditions of ordinary people, and is thought to have influenced the ‘New Deal’ policy of her husband’s government. She was also interested in human rights, and was part of the group that produced the UN (United Nations) Declaration of Human Rights in 1945.
