Gallipoli

From Longman Dictionary of Contemporary EnglishGallipoliGal‧lip‧o‧li /ɡəˈlɪpəli/  an area in Turkey on the north side of the Dardenelles where an important battle took place during World War I. Many Australian and New Zealand soldiers landed on the coast and were killed there by the Turkish army who were fighting on the side of the Germans.
