From Longman Dictionary of Contemporary EnglishGilmore, GaryGary GilmoreGil‧more, Ga‧ry /ˈɡɪlmɔː, ˈɡæri $ -mɔːr/  (1940–77) a US criminal who became famous because he demanded that the government execute him (=officially kill him). He was finally shot by a firing squad.
