From Longman Dictionary of Contemporary EnglishGdanskGdansk /ɡəˈdænsk/  a city and port in Poland, known for its shipyards where protests by workers in the 1980s forced the Communist government to make changes. The trade union, Solidarity, was started there in 1980 by Lech Walesa. Gdansk was formerly known by its German name Danzig.
