Bergman, Ingmar

From Longman Dictionary of Contemporary EnglishBergman, IngmarIngmar BergmanBerg‧man, Ing‧mar /ˈbɜːɡmən, ˈɪŋmɑː $ ˈbɜːr-, ˈɪŋmɑːr/  (1918–2007) a Swedish film maker who is regarded as one of the most important directors in the history of the cinema. His films, which include The Seventh Seal (1956) and Fanny and Alexander (1983), are often about very serious subjects involving characters who experience a lot of emotional suffering. He won Oscar awards for The Virgin Spring (1960) and Through a Glass Darkly (1962).
