INLA, the

From Longman Dictionary of Contemporary EnglishINLA, thethe INLAINLA, the /ˌaɪ en el ˈeɪ/  (the Irish National Liberation Army) the Irish National Liberation Army, an illegal paramilitary organization (=a group like an unofficial army) in Northern Ireland, which wants the two parts of Ireland to be united and uses violent methods to achieve its aims. The INLA is smaller than the IRA and regarded as more extreme. Unlike the IRA it did not support the Northern Ireland peace talks of 1996–98 or the peace agreement of 1998.
