From Longman Dictionary of Contemporary EnglishMonroe, JamesJames MonroeMon‧roe, James /mənˈrəʊ/  (1758–1831) the president of the US from 1817 to 1825. He is known especially for the speech he made to the US Congress in 1823, called the Monroe Doctrine.
