From Longman Dictionary of Contemporary EnglishBarnes, JulianJulian BarnesBarnes, Ju‧li‧an /bɑːnz $ bɑːrnz, ˈdʒuːliən/  (1946–) a British writer whose novels include Metroland and Flaubert’s Parrot. He is very popular in Europe, and has been given literary prizes in France and Germany, which is unusual for a British writer.
