From Longman Dictionary of Contemporary EnglishMerthiolateMer‧thi‧o‧late /ˈmɜːθiəleɪt $ ˈmɜːr-/ trademark American English  a type of bright red liquid medicine formerly used on small cuts in the skin to prevent infection. It has been banned (ban) in the US since the late 1990s.
