New England

From Longman Dictionary of Contemporary EnglishNew EnglandˌNew ˈEngland 🔊 🔊 the states of the northeastern US: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. It is called New England because it was the first part of the US where people from England, including the pilgrim fathers, began to settle in the 17th century.
