HM equal to five, ten etc parts out of a total of 100 parts:
a 10% increase in house prices
a company with a forty percent stake in the project
! Use percent only with a number (30 percent, 9 percent etc). If you mean 'an amount expressed as part of a total' use percentage: A high percentage (NOT percent) of the population was illiterate.
