a) informal someone who is involved in an argument between two opposing sides, but does not know who they should support:
What have I got myself into? I'm piggy in the middle between Guido and Silvia!
b) DGO a game in which two people throw a ball backwards and forwards between them, while a third person in the middle tries to catch it [= keep-away American English]
