From Longman Dictionary of Contemporary EnglishMacdonald, RamseyRamsey MacdonaldMacdonald, Ramsey  (1866–1937) a British politician in the Labour Party, who became the first Labour prime minister in 1924. He was later prime minister of a ‘National Government’ (=a government formed from members of all the political parties) during the period of economic difficulty and high unemployment of the 1930s.
