St Lawrence Seaway, the

From Longman Dictionary of Contemporary EnglishSt Lawrence Seaway, thethe St Lawrence SeawaySt ˌLawrence ˈSeaway, the  a waterway in North America through the St Lawrence River and all the Great Lakes, which can be used by large ships. It was built by the US and Canada by digging passages out of the ground to connect the river and the lakes, and was opened in 1959.
