From Longman Dictionary of Contemporary EnglishTransvaal, thethe TransvaalTrans‧vaal, the /ˈtrænzvɑːl $ ˌtrænsˈvɑːl/  an area in the northeast of South Africa. boer farmers first went to live there in the 1830s, and it became a centre of the afrikaner people and their culture, and of the opposition to British rule in South Africa, which led to the boer war.
