From Longman Dictionary of Contemporary EnglishAshkenazy, VladimirVladimir AshkenazyAsh‧ke‧na‧zy, Vlad‧i‧mir /ˌæʃkəˈnɑːzi, ˈvlædəmɪə $ -mɪr/ 🔊 🔊 (1937–) a pianist and conductor (=someone who directs a group of musicians) who was born in the former Soviet Union. He was musical director of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London from 1987 to 1994 and has conducted several other orchestras.
