From Longman Dictionary of Contemporary EnglishVoltaireVol‧taire /vɒlˈteə $ voʊlˈter/ 🔊 🔊 (1694–1778) a French writer and philosopher who was one of the leaders of the Enlightenment, and whose ideas influenced the French Revolution. He wrote essays on many subjects, but his best-known work is the story Candide.
